The Florence Nightingale Foundation

All nurses know who Florence Nightingale was, but do you know about the Florence Nightingale Foundation? The Florence Nightingale Foundation is a living memorial to Florence Nightingale. It advances the study of nursing and promotes excellence in nursing practice. It raises funds to provide scholarships for nurses and midwives to study at home and abroad, to promote innovation in practice and to extend knowledge and skills to meet changing needs. The Foundation promotes the special contribution of nursing to society and to the health of people. It encourages international understanding and learning between nurses. The Foundation is very grateful to UKONS for the award that is made each year to fund a nurse to undertake a travel scholarship, to investigate an aspect of care of patients suffering from cancer. The Research Scholarships are available to enable nurses and midwives to study research methods or to undertake a research module or dissertation within a degree course. Applications are received up to the beginning of June and interviews take place in August/September. The Travel Scholarships take scholars for and wide to study a large range of subjects, covering every aspect of Nursing and Midwifery. The closing date for applications is early in September with interviews taking place in November each year. The Leadership Development Scholarships are aimed at senior nurses who aspire to become Executive nurses on the Board of a Trust. These are bespoke programmes based on the requirements of the individual following a performance assessment. The Service also celebrates the professions of nursing and midwifery and all staff, both qualified and unqualified working in these services, are invited to attend. Entrance to the Service is by ticket only. These are free and are available during March and April.
