Cyclists Fighting Cancer Mias trike

Eleven year old Mia Reid from Oldbury in the West Midlands has become the proud owner of a specially adapted trike to help her exercise after years of treatment for a brain tumour. Mia, who is an out- patient at Birmingham Children’s Hospital was diagnosed with Gliosblastoma Multiforme, an aggressive type of brain tumour, in 2003. Since then she has undergone brain surgery three times along with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Her mum Neesha says Mia has been left with learning difficulties and epilepsy and she finds physical activities hard due to lack of energy. Mrs. Reid approached the Solihull-based charity Cyclists Fighting Cancer – which donates bikes, trikes and tandems to children and young people affected by cancer and they agreed to source and fund the special 1,300 trike. She works as a volunteer at Birmingham Children’s Hospital in the Oncology Day Care centre and was told by another mum about the charity. Mrs. Reid said, I think CFC is an amazing charity and an unusual one by providing bikes and trikes. A trike is something that will last for a long time and a great form of exercise. She added, Mia wanted a bike but a two wheeler would not have been safe for her. The trike means she can ride independently, safely and most importantly be like other children’. She is so proud that she is doing it all by herself. Mia, who goes to Halesbury Special School in Dudley has so far been riding the trike around the local streets but is looking forward to riding it to her brother’s school after half term and also to the park. Mia’s only had the bike for a short time but I have already seen in increase in her fitness level and have no doubt this will continue, said Mrs. Reid. Mike Grisenthwaite, Founder of Cyclists Fighting Cancer, a cancer survivor himself said, I’m so pleased to hear that Mia loves her trike and it is already helping to make a difference to her life and that of her family.
