An afternoon to familiarise UKONS members with differing stages of research careers, writing for poster presentations conferences and for publication.


  • To educate UKONS members with the process of writing an abstract for a poster presentation at a conference.
  • To discuss the process and requirements of writing for publication focusing on how this differs across journals.
  • To familiarise UKONS member with differing stages of careers in research


13.00-13.15 Welcome and introduction - Professor Emma Ream and Dr Catherine Oakley 

13.15-13.45 Creating an abstract for a poster presentation - Dr Joanne Bird 

13.45-15.00 Writing for publication - With input from editors of the Journal of Cancer Nursing Practice, European Journal of Cancer Care, Nursing Times and British Journal of Nursing on how to write for publication and how this differs between different journals. 

15.00-15.15 Comfort break 

15.15-16.00 A view of differing stages and careers in research – with Tessa Renouf, (NIHR Pre doc Fellow and Lecturer, Royal Marsden School) and Mary Tanay (NIHR Doctoral Research Fellow and Senior Teaching Fellow, Kings College London)
