The United Kingdom Oncology Nursing Society (UKONS) is inviting applications for a research grant of up to £20,000.
This funding has been allocated to support a preliminary research study to investigate the risk to nurses of occupational exposure to cytotoxic drugs using current best practices for safe handling.
UKONS would like to support the cancer nursing community to build on the findings and recommendations from a Cochrane Review that compared closed-system drug-transfer devices plus safe handling of hazardous drugs to safe handling alone (Gurusamy 2018).
A requirement of the proposed study is to include direct (as opposed to proxy) primary outcome measure(s) to establish nurses’ risk of cytotoxic drug exposure when using current best practices for safe handling.
Secondary outcomes of the study may include comparing the effectiveness of current best practices for safe handling to safe handling plus additional safety measures, such as the use of closed-system drug-transfer devices.
